ABOUT THE RACES
The Lenovo Magnificent Mile Races & Fun Runs are the inspiration of Sarah Roberts-Witt who has PLS, a motor neuron disease related to ALS; and Scott and Amy Corsmeier, siblings who have HSP, a hereditary motor neuron disease. Sarah was an avid runner and marathoner until her illness began in 2004. Scott and Amy were diagnosed when they were young children. Proceeds from these races will help fund research grants awarded by the Spastic Paraplegia Foundation.

THE RACES & COURSES
All races are run on pavement. Races go on rain or shine. The competitive mile run features a very fast and flat course down Hillsborough Street, around the Capitol and back to the start. The course is USATF certified (course #NC07111NW) and USATF sanctioned. Timing will use the ChampionChip® system, and all performances will be submitted for both state and national records. There will be two heats: Men's Competitive (2:00pm) and Women's Competitive (2:20pm). Runners must compete in the heat corresponding to their gender in order to have an official time, to be eligible for awards and to receive Second Empire Grand Prix points. The non-competitive mile run/walk will start immediately afterward on the same course. Baby joggers will be permitted only in the non-competitive mile run/walk. The Mini-Mile runs will start at approximately 3PM and will be 100 meters for 6-and-under and ¼ mile for 6-10 year olds. Parents are welcome and encouraged to run with their children. We ask all runners to stay and help cheer on our mini-milers! Timing for the competitive race (only) will use the ChampionChip® system.

All competitive performances will be submitted for both state and national records. The mile course starts and finishes near the Second Empire Restaurant & Tavern, 330 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC.

REGISTRATION AND RACE PACKET PICKUP:
Late entrants can register and pre-registered runners can pick up their packets at The Athlete’s Foot at Cameron Village in Raleigh on Saturday, September 13th from 2:00-6:00pm and on race day at the Clarion Hotel State Capital (320 Hillsborough Street) starting at 12:30pm.

All competitive mile runners will be issued a ChampionChip timing chip on race day (failure to return your chip immediately after the race will result in a $15 charge).

T-SHIRTS: The first 650 pre-registered Mile runners will be guaranteed a t-shirt. Mini-Mile run participants will receive commemorative medals.

AWARDS (Competitive Mile Only):

Awards are based on gun time. All prize money and awards have been generously provided by The Athlete's Foot - Cameron Village.

RRCA award plaques - Overall winners in the open, masters and grandmasters categories (both sexes)

USATF: Prize money will be awarded as follows (both sexes): open: $250 1st, $150 2nd, $100 3rd; masters: $100 1st, $50 2nd; grandmasters: $100 1st, $50 2nd (NOTE: you must be a current USATF member and a resident of NC for 12 months to qualify for USATF prize money)

Age Group Awards: Gift certificate awards will also be presented to the top three finishers in each of the following age divisions (both sexes): 0-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30- 34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79,
80-84, 85-over. (no duplication of awards)

Second Empire Grand Prix points will be awarded per the divisions and rules of their series.

POST RACE ACTIVITIES: Following the race there will be plenty of refreshments near the finish line as well as a drawing for LOTS of door prizes. The awards ceremony will also take place there. Race results will be posted after the race and also at www.ncroadrunners.org.

DIRECTIONS TO THE RACE SITE:
The Lenovo Magnificent Mile start/finish area will be located close to the 300 block of Hillsborough Street in downtown Raleigh near the intersection with Harrington Street. This is approximately 3 blocks west of the State Capitol building. Landmarks include the Second Empire restaurant and Clarion Hotel. There will be plenty of parking available on the side streets and in parking lots near the race site.

ABOUT THE SPASTIC PARAPLEGIA FOUNDATION: The SP Foundation is a nonprofit organization that was founded four years ago. Its primary mission is to find a cure for motor neuron disease and raise awareness of its devastating effect on those who suffer from it. Approximately 92% of its funds go to this mission. Last year, the foundation awarded more than $500,000 in research grants. Dr. Richard Bedlack of Duke University ALS Clinic will speak regarding the cause at the race.
