P.S. Did you know that the Adopt-a-Highway program began in Texas back in the 80's? The idea came about because someone with the DOT noticed that a lot of trash was getting on the roads from open pickup trucks. I know when I was in Texas in the late 80's they were still coming with ways to get people stop throwing trash in the back of trucks - The "Don't Mess With Texas" signs was one such attempt. I have a feeling that the Adopt-a-Highway program does a much better job of keeping the roads clean.
Since then, there are thousands of civic groups, businesses, and non-profit organizations that claim a section of roadway and commit to picking up the trash. The section that the NCRC commits to keeping clean is along Millbrook Road near Shelley Lake, where many of us like to go for a run.
It's a great way to support the NCRC and get to know some of the other members. After we have finished our duties, we get together afterward to eat bagels and enjoy some liquid refreshments (usually; coffee, juice, or some hot chocolate if it's cold out). We like to see who found the most interesting piece of trash, talk about upcoming races, great places to run, and anything else that may come up.
